1980
Having graduated with a BA Hons degree in Graphic Design from Newcastle, Tony secured his first job in the heart of London’s Covent Garden for The Saunders Design Company.
1980 - 1986
After 3 years learning the ropes as a creative junior, Tony was promoted to senior graphic designer. He carried on working at Saunders Design for a further 3 years, gaining valuable experience in branding and retail design sectors.
1986 - 1992
Isherwood & Company, a design agency in Putney, South West London approached Tony. They asked him to set up and run their graphic design department alongside their already thriving retail and interior design team.
Tony worked as Isherwood’s Graphic Design Director for 6 years. In 1988, he was joined by his brother Peter, who’d recently graduated from Salisbury College of Art and Design. Over the next 4 years, the Isherwood graphic design team grew from 2 to 12 designers. Tony & Peter worked successfully together on many high profile branding and marketing projects until they decided the time was right to start their own design agency.
1992
Several lengthy sessions down the local pub in search of a suitable name for the new business proved fruitful and in September 1992, ‘Right Angle’ was launched.
The first Right Angle studio was in Walthamstow Village (yes there is a village in Walthamstow) London E17. After a slow start, the business built up at a steady pace. Walthamstow, being at the end of the Victoria line was perfect for our trips into London to pick up design briefs from clients such as Dorothy Perkins and House of Fraser.
1995
As the company grew, Tony & Peter needed a larger studio and in 1995 they relocated to Southgate, London N14, employing 2 more designers to help them with the ever-increasing workload.
2004
Frequent trips on the Picadilly Line into London to pick up design briefs from Caffe Nero and Top Shop (to name but a few), kept things ticking over nicely. Tesco became a client and we completed over 800 major projects for them over 12 years. In 2004, due to the amount of business coming in, Right Angle changed from a partnership to a limited company.
We carried on at the Southgate studio for another 3 years until once again, a larger design space was needed. Due to the changes in business communication brought about by the Internet, we were able to relocate outside of London.
2007 - Present
Right Angle moved to Much Hadham in Hertfordshire, just outside Bishop’s Stortford on the Hertfordshire / Essex border, a converted barn in a picturesque rural setting – perfect for creativity.
Since the move, the Right Angle team has gone from strength to strength, and now boasts an excellent spread of skills and a ‘can-do’ attitude.
Tony was asked to write a column for the Herts & Essex Observer ‘Brand Aid – a helping hand with branding and marketing’, some of which can be read on our blog.
